Quick answer
At a sangeet, guests wear festive, flowy Indian outfits they can dance in: a flared Anarkali gown, a sharara or gharara set, a lightweight lehenga, or an Indo-western look. Bright and jewel colours like pink, teal, royal blue, emerald, purple and gold are perfect, and some shimmer is welcome because the sangeet is an evening party. Skip anything heavy or tight, wear comfortable heels or embellished flats, and avoid bridal red unless the couple says otherwise.
This guide is for guests at sangeets in India, the USA, the UK, Canada, the UAE and Australia.

What is a sangeet?
A sangeet (from the Hindi word for music) is a pre-wedding party with music, dance performances by both families and lots of dancing. It is usually held in the evening, one or two days before the wedding. In many weddings abroad it is combined with the mehndi or the cocktail party.
Best sangeet outfits for guests
| Outfit | Why it works | Best for | |---|---|---| | Flared Anarkali gown | Twirls beautifully, no dupatta to manage while dancing | Most guests | | Sharara or gharara set | Festive and easy to move in | Guests who love a traditional look | | Lightweight lehenga | Very festive; choose georgette or chiffon over heavy silk | Family members and close friends | | Anarkali suit with dupatta | Classic and elegant; pin the dupatta on one shoulder | Guests who prefer more coverage | | Indo-western (cape set, dhoti pants, saree gown) | Modern and dance-friendly | Cocktail-style sangeets |
Fabric tips
Georgette, chiffon, organza and light velvet are best. They flow when you move and do not crease much. Avoid stiff, heavy fabrics if you plan to dance all night.
Colours to wear and avoid
Great sangeet colours: rani pink, teal, royal blue, emerald, purple, wine, mustard, gold and silver.
Avoid:
- Bridal red, unless the couple asks for it
- Matching the bride or groom's family if they have a colour theme; ask the couple first
- All black at traditional family sangeets (many families find it unlucky); at a cocktail-style sangeet black with gold is often fine
If the couple has shared a dress code, follow it. Many couples now send a dress code card with colours for each function.
Shoes, jewellery and bag
- Shoes: block heels, wedges or embellished juttis. You will dance for hours, so choose comfort.
- Jewellery: statement earrings or chandbalis and a few bangles. Skip heavy necklaces that swing while dancing. See our guide on jewellery to wear with an Anarkali.
- Bag: a small potli or wristlet that leaves your hands free.
Sangeets in the USA, UK and Canada
- Winter sangeets: choose velvet or carry a long coat and a warm shawl for walking between the car and the venue. Our velvet Anarkali guide has more tips.
- Hotel ballrooms: sangeets abroad often feel like a formal party, so a little more shimmer is welcome.
- Performances: if you are dancing in a family performance, ask if the group is wearing matching colours.
Sangeet outfit ideas by body type
- Tall women: floor-length gowns and long Anarkalis look stunning. Read our tall women guide.
- Plus-size women: an Anarkali with a defined waist or belt and a full flare is very flattering. See our plus-size guide.
- Petite women: choose a mid-calf Anarkali or a short kurta with a sharara so the outfit does not overwhelm you.
Frequently asked questions
What should a non-Indian guest wear to a sangeet? A flowy Anarkali gown, sharara set or light lehenga in a bright colour is perfect. Indian families love it when guests wear Indian outfits. If you prefer western clothes, a bright cocktail dress or jumpsuit with statement earrings also works.
Can I wear a lehenga to a sangeet as a guest? Yes. A lightweight lehenga is a popular sangeet outfit. Just avoid red and very heavy bridal-style lehengas.
Is a sangeet formal or casual? It is a festive evening party, more dressy than the mehndi but more relaxed than the wedding ceremony. Think party-ready and comfortable.
Can I wear the same outfit to the sangeet and the reception? You can, but most guests change. If you only want to buy one outfit, choose a versatile Anarkali gown and change the jewellery and hair for each event.
What colour should I wear to a sangeet? Bright jewel tones like pink, teal, royal blue, emerald and purple are the most popular. Avoid bridal red and follow any colour theme the couple shares.
