Quick answer
A Punjabi wedding guest outfit needs to do three things: look bright and festive, cover you properly for the gurdwara, and let you dance until midnight without a wardrobe malfunction. Think jewel-toned Anarkalis and embroidered kurta sets with a generous dupatta, and leave the all-black and stark white looks at home. Here is how to dress for every function, from the chunni ceremony to the reception.

Know the functions before you shop
A Punjabi wedding is rarely a one-day affair. Most families host a few of these events, and each has its own mood:
- Roka or chunni - an intimate family ceremony, usually at home. Polished but simple.
- Mehndi and jaggo - loud, joyful and late. You will be clapping, dancing with a decorated pot on someone's head, and sitting on floor cushions.
- Sangeet - the party night. This is where your most glamorous outfit belongs.
- Anand Karaj - the wedding ceremony at the gurdwara, usually in the morning. Respectful and covered.
- Reception - an evening banquet, often the dressiest event of all.
Ask which events you are invited to before you shop. Two restyled outfits often cover four functions.
Dressing for the gurdwara (Anand Karaj)
This is the one function with real rules, so get it right. Everyone covers their head inside the gurdwara, men and women alike, so your dupatta is not optional. Choose one that is long and light enough to stay put over your hair while you sit for the ceremony.
You will remove your shoes at the entrance and sit on the floor, often cross-legged, for an hour or more. That makes a straight kurta with pants or a salwar far more practical than a fitted lehenga or anything short. Shoulders should be covered and necklines modest.
Soft, happy colours work beautifully in the morning light: coral, peach, mint and powder blue. A piece like the Coral Pink Chanderi Kurta Set with Hand-Embroidered Yoke is ideal because the cutwork dupatta is wide enough to drape over your head and the pants make sitting easy.
Colour guide for a Punjabi wedding
Punjabi weddings celebrate colour, and guests are expected to join in. Here is a quick guide:
| Function | Mood | Colours that work | Avoid | |---|---|---|---| | Roka / chunni | Warm, intimate | Peach, rose pink, mint | Very heavy embellishment | | Mehndi / jaggo | Playful, loud | Green, yellow, rani pink, orange | Delicate fabrics that stain | | Sangeet | Party | Royal blue, purple, emerald, wine | Anything you cannot dance in | | Anand Karaj | Respectful | Coral, pastels, soft gold | Short hemlines, bare shoulders | | Reception | Glamorous | Jewel tones, metallic accents | Bridal red, all-black |
Red is traditionally the bride's colour, so let her own it. Black is still considered unlucky by many older relatives, and plain white is linked with mourning, so those are best avoided too.
Mehndi and jaggo: dress for movement
At the mehndi you will be sitting on the floor while henna dries, eating with one hand, and then dancing the gidda. Choose cotton or a light blend, a kurta that is not too long, and a dupatta you can tie across your body. A short kurti in a cheerful colour is perfect here. The Rani Pink Embroidered Kurti with Side Tie-Up pairs easily with pants or a printed palazzo you already own, and at $25 you will not mind a stray henna mark.
Keep jewellery fun rather than precious: bangles, jhumkas and a paranda in your braid.
Sangeet and reception: bring the glamour
This is where the Anarkali shines. A flared Anarkali gives you the twirl on the dance floor, hides a big dinner, and photographs beautifully under stage lights. Georgette and taffeta silk hold their shape and catch the light without feeling stiff.
The Royal Blue Georgette Anarkali Suit Set with Gota Lace Dupatta is a strong sangeet choice: deep colour, gold detail, and enough flare for bhangra.
For the reception, a softer jewel tone like the Lavender Taffeta Silk Gota Work Anarkali feels elegant and modern without competing with the bride.
Pair your Anarkali with block heels or embellished juttis. You will be dancing on a hard floor for hours, and stilettos rarely survive the dhol.
Punjabi wedding dress code in the UK, USA and Canada
Most Punjabi weddings abroad follow the same pattern: a gurdwara ceremony in the morning and a party or reception at a banqueting hall in the evening. The dress code is simple:
- Morning (gurdwara): modest kurta set or salwar suit, covered shoulders, dupatta for your head, shoes you can slip off.
- Evening (reception or party): your most festive outfit – an Anarkali, an embellished kurta set or a lehenga.
- Weather: winter weddings in the UK and Canada mean cold mornings. Wear a long coat over your outfit to the gurdwara, and thin warm leggings under straight pants.
- Two outfits: most guests change between the ceremony and the evening.
What should a non-Punjabi guest wear to a Punjabi wedding?
You are very welcome to wear Indian clothes, and Punjabi hosts usually love it. An embroidered kurta set with a dupatta is perfect for the gurdwara, and a jewel-tone Anarkali is easy to wear and dance in for the evening. If you prefer Western clothes for the reception, choose a colourful, modest dress – and still bring a scarf for the gurdwara.
Fit, timing and practical tips
A well-fitted outfit matters more than an expensive one, especially when you are dancing. If ready sizes never sit right on your shoulders or bust, our free custom fit lets you share your measurements so the piece is stitched to your body at no extra cost.
Made-to-measure pieces take 5 to 7 working days, plus 5 to 10 business days for delivery, so order at least 3 to 4 weeks before the first function. Wedding season runs roughly from November to February, which is also the busiest time to order.
A few more tips:
- Carry a few safety pins for your dupatta; gurdwara and dance floor both test it.
- Wear comfortable shoes you can slip off quickly at the gurdwara door.
- Bring a light shawl for winter mornings, as halls and gurdwaras can be cold.
Frequently asked questions
What is the dress code for a Punjabi wedding? A modest kurta set or salwar suit with a dupatta for the gurdwara ceremony, and a festive Anarkali, embellished kurta set or lehenga for the evening party. Bright and jewel tones are welcome; avoid bridal red, all black and plain white.
What should a non-Punjabi guest wear to a Punjabi wedding? An embroidered kurta set with a dupatta for the ceremony and a jewel-tone Anarkali for the evening. Hosts are usually delighted when guests wear Indian outfits.
What should I wear to a Punjabi wedding in the UK in winter? A long coat over your kurta set for the gurdwara, warm leggings under straight pants, and a velvet or heavier Anarkali for the evening reception.
Do I have to cover my head at a Punjabi wedding? Yes, inside the gurdwara during the Anand Karaj everyone covers their head. A dupatta is the easiest option. At the other functions it is not required.
Can I wear a saree to a Punjabi wedding? Of course. Many guests do. For the gurdwara ceremony, though, a kurta set is easier because you will be sitting on the floor.
What colours should a guest avoid at a Punjabi wedding? Avoid bridal red, all-black and plain white. Almost every other bright or jewel tone is welcome.
Is a kurta set dressy enough for the reception? Yes, if you choose richer fabric, gota or embroidery and style it with statement earrings. An Anarkali is the easiest way to look dressed up.
