Quick answer

At a Hindu Kerala (Malayali) wedding, female guests often wear a cream or off-white kasavu saree with a gold border, a set-mundu (mundum neriyathum) or a silk saree in a soft or rich colour. Unlike most Indian weddings, cream and gold is traditional and welcome here. A cream, ivory or pastel kurta set with gold detail is an elegant alternative. The ceremony is usually short and in the morning, often at a temple or hall, followed by a sadya feast on banana leaves. Avoid all black and keep shoulders covered.

This guide is for guests at Malayali weddings in Kerala, the Gulf, the UK, the USA, Canada and Australia.

What happens at a Hindu Kerala wedding?

Hindu Kerala weddings are known for being elegant and quick – the main ceremony can be over in under 30 minutes.

| Moment | What happens | What to wear | |---|---|---| | Muhurtham | The groom ties the thali, the couple exchange garlands, and the groom gives the bride a new cloth (pudava) | Kasavu saree, set-mundu or a cream/pastel kurta set | | Sadya | A vegetarian feast served on a banana leaf | The same outfit – you will sit at long tables | | Reception | Evening event, more glamorous | Silk saree, lehenga or Anarkali |

Why is cream and gold allowed at a Kerala wedding?

In most of India, plain white is avoided at weddings. Kerala is different: the kasavu – handwoven cream cotton with a gold zari border – is the region's traditional festive wear, worn at weddings, Onam and Vishu. The bride often wears a gold-bordered kasavu or a Kanchipuram silk.

As a guest, cream with gold looks graceful and right. Just keep it lighter in gold than the bride's look.

The off-white embroidered kurta set with organza dupatta ($52) gives you the cream-and-gold Kerala feel in a kurta set – add gold jhumkas and jasmine in your hair.

What if I don't want to wear cream?

Silk sarees and silk-look outfits in soft and rich colours are just as common:

  • Pastels: peach, mint, powder pink, lavender
  • Rich tones: green, maroon, mustard, peacock blue

The coral pink chanderi kurta set ($52) and the lavender taffeta silk Anarkali ($52) both suit a Kerala wedding.

Colours to avoid

  • All black: seen as inauspicious.
  • Very flashy, heavy outfits at a simple temple ceremony: Kerala weddings lean elegant rather than loud.

Temple etiquette

Many Hindu Kerala weddings take place in or near a temple, such as Guruvayur. Keep shoulders covered, remove shoes, and avoid jeans or short dresses. Some temples have strict dress codes, so check with the hosts.

Christian and Muslim Kerala weddings

  • Kerala Christian weddings take place in church. Brides often wear a white saree or gown. Guests wear sarees, kurta sets or modest Western dresses, and the reception is usually more glamorous.
  • Kerala Muslim weddings centre on the nikah. Guests wear modest outfits with covered arms; a dupatta or scarf is useful. See our Nikah and Walima guest guide.

Styling tips

  1. Jasmine flowers (mulla poo): the classic Kerala touch.
  2. Gold jewellery: a simple necklace, jhumkas and bangles.
  3. A small bindi or sandal-paste mark: if you usually wear one.
  4. Light fabrics: Kerala is warm and humid all year.
