For a Nikah, guests usually wear a modest, elegant outfit: an Anarkali or long kurta set with covered shoulders, longer sleeves, an ankle-length hem and a dupatta you can drape over your head. Soft jewel tones and pastels work well. Save heavier sparkle for the Walima, the reception hosted by the groom's family.
This guide is for guests in the UK, US, Canada, UAE or Australia attending a Muslim wedding, whether you are a close friend, a colleague or attending for the first time.

What should you wear to a Nikah as a guest?
The Nikah is the marriage contract and the heart of the wedding. It may be held at a mosque, a family home or a banquet hall, and it is often quieter and more formal than the celebrations around it. Your outfit should feel graceful and covered rather than flashy.
A floor-length Anarkali is one of the easiest choices. It covers the legs, flows well and looks formal without effort. The royal blue georgette Anarkali suit with handwork and gota lace dupatta ($52) is a strong fit: rich colour, soft drape and a dupatta wide enough to cover your head.
If the Nikah is at a mosque
Cover your hair with your dupatta before you enter, and keep your arms covered. Shoes come off at the entrance, so slip-on juttis or flats save time. Seating is often separate for men and women.
If the Nikah is at a hall or home
A head covering may be optional, but it is still kind to carry your dupatta and follow what the women of the family do.
How do you keep an outfit modest but festive?
Modest does not mean plain. It is about where the coverage sits.
- Necklines: round, boat or high necks rather than deep V or sweetheart cuts
- Sleeves: three-quarter or full sleeves, or a dupatta draped over both shoulders if a style has shorter sleeves
- Length: ankle-length Anarkalis, or a long kurta with full-length pants
- Fabric: opaque or fully lined, never see-through on its own
- Dupatta: wide and long enough to cover your head and shoulders
From our Jaipur studio: Georgette and chiffon dupattas are soft and light, so they sit gently on the head but can slide. Fold the edge back once and use a small pin at each side. Organza holds its shape and shows gota borders beautifully, but it is crisper, so it is better around the shoulders than over the head for long periods.
Nikah vs Walima: what changes?
The two events have a different feel, so plan two outfits if you are attending both.
| | Nikah | Walima | |---|---|---| | Hosted by | Often the bride's side, or both families | The groom's family | | Mood | Formal, calm, religious | Celebration dinner | | Coverage | Head, arms and legs covered | Modest, with more flexibility | | Fabric | Georgette, chiffon, Kota Doria | Taffeta silk, organza, embellished georgette | | Colour | Pastels, soft jewel tones | Deeper jewel tones, gold accents |
For the Walima, a taffeta silk Anarkali gives you the shine of a reception look. The lavender taffeta silk Anarkali with gota work and organza dupatta ($52) is elegant under ballroom lights and still fully covering in length.
Which colours should guests avoid at a Nikah?
Many brides wear red or deep maroon for the Nikah or the main celebration, so avoid matching that shade closely. Some brides also choose white, ivory or pastel gold, so if you know the bridal colour in advance, choose something clearly different.
Black is worn by guests in many communities, especially at evening events, but some families prefer brighter colours at weddings. If in doubt, choose navy, plum or emerald, which feel rich without the question mark.
Safe and lovely choices include royal blue, lavender, sage green, dusty pink, purple and navy. The purple bandhani chiffon Anarkali with a hand-embroidered neckline ($52) is a soft, flowing option for either event.
For a daytime Nikah at home, a lighter kurta set also works well. The navy blue Kota Doria embroidered kurta set ($52) is airy for a warm room and comes with a matching dupatta.
This season, pastels with gold thread are a popular choice for daytime Nikah guests.
