Quick answer
At a Tamil wedding, female guests traditionally wear a silk saree, often a Kanchipuram (Kanjivaram) silk, in rich colours like mustard, magenta, emerald, maroon or peacock blue. A silk-look kurta set or Anarkali is perfectly acceptable if you do not wear sarees. The main ceremony, the muhurtham, is often early in the morning at a temple or wedding hall, so plan a respectful, covered outfit. Avoid all black and plain white, and add jasmine flowers to your hair if you like.

What are the functions at a Tamil wedding?
| Function | When | What to wear | Colours | |---|---|---|---| | Nichayathartham (engagement) | Weeks or a day before | Silk saree or chanderi kurta set | Soft or rich colours | | Reception | Often the evening before the muhurtham | Your most glamorous outfit | Jewel tones, gold, pastels with shine | | Nalangu and pre-wedding rituals | Day before | Light silk or cotton | Bright, cheerful | | Muhurtham (main ceremony) | Early morning, often 6–10 am | Silk saree or silk-look kurta set | Mustard, magenta, green, maroon, peacock blue |
Unlike many North Indian weddings, the reception at a Tamil wedding is often held the night before the main ceremony. Check the invitation carefully.
What should you wear to the muhurtham?
The muhurtham is the auspicious moment when the groom ties the thaali (mangalsutra) around the bride's neck. It usually takes place in the morning at a temple or a kalyana mandapam (wedding hall).
- Traditional: a Kanchipuram silk saree with a contrast border, or a lighter silk-cotton saree.
- If you do not wear sarees: a silk-look kurta set with a dupatta, or an Anarkali in a rich colour. Chanderi and taffeta silk give the sheen of silk without the weight.
- Coverage: keep shoulders covered and avoid short hemlines, especially in a temple.
- Shoes: you will remove them at the temple or mandapam entrance.
The coral pink chanderi kurta set with hand-embroidered yoke ($52) has a gentle silk sheen that looks right in morning light. The sage green taffeta silk Anarkali ($52) gives the richness of silk for close family friends.
Which colours should you wear to a Tamil wedding?
Tamil weddings love bright, auspicious colours. Guests usually choose:
- Mustard and turmeric yellow: auspicious and very traditional.
- Magenta and rani pink: festive and photogenic.
- Emerald, bottle green and parrot green: classic Kanchipuram shades.
- Maroon and deep red-brown: rich and traditional (avoid a bright bridal red head to toe).
- Peacock blue and royal blue: striking in photos.
- Contrast borders: a gold or contrast-coloured border is very much in style.
Colours to avoid
- All black: considered inauspicious at many Tamil weddings.
- Plain white: associated with mourning. White or cream with a gold border, as in a Kerala-style saree, is different and may be fine – ask if unsure.
- Head-to-toe bridal red: leave that to the bride.
What should you wear to a Tamil wedding reception?
The reception is the glamorous evening event. Guests wear heavier silk sarees, designer sarees, lehengas or Anarkalis. This is the moment for shine and embroidery.
The royal blue georgette Anarkali with gota dupatta ($52) or the lavender taffeta silk Anarkali ($52) both work well under evening lights.
Styling a Tamil wedding guest look
- Jasmine flowers (malli poo): a string of jasmine in a braid or bun is a lovely, traditional touch.
- Gold-tone jewellery: temple jewellery, jhumkas or a simple necklace suits the occasion.
- A small bindi: if you usually wear one.
- Comfortable footwear: you will slip them off often.
- Light layers: morning ceremonies in India can be warm, while UK and Canadian halls can be cold.
Sri Lankan Tamil weddings in the UK and Canada
Sri Lankan Tamil weddings in London, Toronto and elsewhere follow many of the same traditions: a morning ceremony, rich silk sarees and bright, auspicious colours. The reception is often a separate evening event at a banqueting hall. The same colour rules apply.
What should a non-Tamil guest wear?
You do not need a Kanchipuram saree. A silk-look kurta set or Anarkali in mustard, magenta, green or blue, with covered shoulders, is respectful and elegant. Hosts are usually delighted when guests wear Indian clothes.
