The best Gujarati wedding guest outfit is one you can spin in. Between the garba night, the turmeric-splashed pithi and the wedding day itself, you need a flared Anarkali for dancing, a washable cotton set for the haldi, and one richer outfit with a dupatta for the pheras. Bandhani, bright colour and a bit of shimmer will make you fit right in.

The Gujarati wedding calendar, decoded

Gujarati families usually spread the celebrations over two to four days. The exact list varies by community, but you will most likely be invited to some of these:

  • Mandap mahurat and grah shanti - small morning pujas at home, mostly for close family.
  • Pithi - the haldi ceremony, where turmeric paste is applied to the bride or groom. Messy and full of laughter.
  • Mehndi - an afternoon or evening of henna, snacks and music.
  • Garba or dandiya raas - the big dance night, and for many guests the highlight.
  • Wedding day - the baraat, jaan welcome and pheras, often in the late morning or evening.
  • Reception - a dressy dinner, sometimes on the same night as the wedding.

Garba night: choose flare, not fuss

Garba is an hour or three of circles, claps and spins. Your outfit has to move with you, so look for an Anarkali or a kurta with a wide hem. A flared silhouette also looks stunning in photos when you turn.

Bandhani is the classic Gujarati tie-dye, and wearing it to garba is a lovely nod to the culture. The Purple Bandhani Chiffon Anarkali Suit Set is light, floaty and made for this night. Chiffon breathes well in a packed hall, and the embroidered neckline means you need very little jewellery.

Practical garba tips:

  • Pin your dupatta across your body or tie it at the waist, so both hands are free for dandiya sticks.
  • Wear flat juttis or mojaris. Many people dance barefoot, so pick shoes that slip off easily.
  • Skip long, heavy necklaces that swing into your face. Oxidised jhumkas and stacked bangles are perfect.

Pithi: wear cotton you can wash

At the pithi, turmeric gets everywhere, and sometimes guests are playfully smeared too. Yellow is the traditional colour, but any cheerful shade works. The golden rule is to avoid delicate silk or anything dry-clean only.

A hand block printed cotton set is the smart choice. The Mint Green Hand Block Print Kurta Pant Dupatta Set is soft, breathable and fresh against all that yellow, and cotton can be washed gently at home if haldi lands on it. Rinse any stain in cold water as soon as you can, because warm water sets turmeric.

The wedding day: graceful and a little more formal

Many Gujarati women wear a saree on the wedding day, often draped in the seedha pallu style with the pallu brought over the right shoulder to the front. If saree is not your thing, a kurta set with a dupatta draped the same way gives you the look without the pleats.

The pheras can be long, and you may be standing near a fire in a warm hall, so breathable fabric with some richness works best. The Peach Pink Embroidered Kurta Set with Cutwork Organza Dupatta strikes that balance: a comfortable cotton base with an organza dupatta that looks dressy over one shoulder.

For an evening reception, step up to taffeta silk or gota work. The Sage Green Taffeta Silk Gota Work Anarkali has the sheen and structure that feel right for a sit-down dinner.

Outfit planner at a glance

| Event | Best silhouette | Fabric | Colour ideas | |---|---|---|---| | Pithi | Straight kurta set | Hand block printed cotton | Mint, yellow, peach | | Mehndi | Short kurti or co-ord | Cotton | Green, rani pink, orange | | Garba night | Flared Anarkali | Chiffon, georgette | Purple, red-orange bandhani, royal blue | | Wedding day | Kurta set or saree | Cotton with organza, chanderi | Peach, coral, soft gold | | Reception | Anarkali | Taffeta silk, gota work | Sage, lavender, wine |

Red and white together is a bridal combination in Gujarati weddings (the panetar saree), so keep that pairing for the bride. Black is usually avoided at the main ceremony.

Planning, sizing and ordering

If you are attending three or four events, think in pairs: one dupatta can restyle two kurta sets, and the same jewellery can shift from mehndi to garba with a change of bangles. For a garba Anarkali, fit through the bust and armholes matters most, because you will have your arms raised all night. Our how to measure guide walks you through taking bust, waist, hip and height at home, and we stitch to those numbers for free.

Made-to-measure takes 5 to 7 working days to make and about 5 to 10 business days to arrive, so order at least 3 to 4 weeks before the first function.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear to a Gujarati garba night at a wedding? A flared Anarkali or a lehenga-style outfit in bright colours, ideally bandhani or mirror-inspired, with flat shoes you can dance in.

Can I wear white to a Gujarati wedding? Off-white with colourful embroidery is fine for day events. Avoid an all-white look and the red-and-white combination, which belongs to the bride.

Do guests need to wear a saree on the wedding day? No. A kurta set or Anarkali with a nicely draped dupatta is perfectly appropriate.

What fabric is best for the pithi ceremony? Washable cotton. Turmeric stains silk easily, so save your best pieces for the evening.
