Quick answer
As a female guest at a Bengali wedding, wear a silk saree, a rich Anarkali or an embroidered kurta set in jewel tones – emerald, royal blue, magenta, purple or mustard. Avoid head-to-toe red (the bride's colour) and plain white (linked with mourning in many Bengali families). The main wedding is usually in the evening, so a little shine and gold jewellery are welcome. You do not have to wear a saree.
This guide is for guests flying in from the UK, US, Canada or Australia who want to look festive and respectful without owning a Banarasi saree.

What do female guests wear to a Bengali wedding?
Traditionally, women guests wear sarees: Banarasi silk, Jamdani or a crisp tant cotton for daytime. Today, Anarkalis and embroidered kurta sets are completely normal at Bengali weddings, especially for guests who travel or are not confident draping a saree.
The wedding itself, the biye, often runs late into the evening, sometimes past midnight depending on the auspicious time. Rituals such as shubho drishti, mala badal and sindoor daan happen with the whole family gathered close, so you will be seen up close and in many photos. Choose rich fabric and a colour with depth.
A taffeta silk Anarkali catches the warm lights at a Bengali wedding beautifully. Our sage green taffeta silk Anarkali with gota work and a sequin organza dupatta ($52) has the sheen of silk without a heavy saree to manage.
Which colours should guests avoid at a Bengali wedding?
The Bengali bride usually wears a red Banarasi saree with white shakha and red pola bangles. That red and white pairing is hers, so guests avoid looking like a second bride.
Colours to skip
- Bridal red head to toe
- Plain white, which many families associate with mourning
- All black at the main ceremony, which some families find inauspicious
Colours that work beautifully
Emerald, bottle green, royal blue, magenta, deep purple, mustard and wine all sit well next to the bride's red. Pastels are fine for daytime events, but for the night ceremony a deeper shade looks more festive in photos.
From our Jaipur studio: Under the warm yellow lights of a wedding pandal, taffeta silk glows and gota work picks up every flash. Georgette looks softer and flows more. If the ceremony runs late and the venue is crowded, georgette is the lighter, cooler choice.
What should you wear to each Bengali wedding function?
A Bengali wedding is not one event. Here is a simple plan by function:
| Function | Time | Outfit | Fabric | Colour | |---|---|---|---|---| | Gaye holud | Morning | Cotton kurta set or tunic | Cotton, block print | Yellow, mustard, green | | Biye (wedding) | Evening to night | Anarkali or rich kurta set | Taffeta silk, georgette | Emerald, royal blue, magenta | | Bou bhaat (reception) | Evening | Embellished Anarkali | Georgette, organza | Purple, wine, gold |
Gaye holud
This is the turmeric ceremony, held in the morning at home. Turmeric paste may be shared around, so wear washable cotton in yellow or green. The yellow embroidered cotton tunic top with a black floral yoke ($27) with white pants is easy, cheerful and fine if a little haldi lands on it.
Biye
This is the main event. Go for the richest piece you are bringing. The royal blue georgette Anarkali with handwork and a gota lace dupatta ($52) is a strong choice because blue looks striking beside the bride's red.
Bou bhaat
The reception is hosted by the groom's family. It is relaxed and glamorous at the same time, and a good moment for a jewel-tone kurta set or your second Anarkali. The plum purple embroidered cotton suit set ($48) is comfortable for a long dinner and still dressy with gold jewellery.
What should a hijabi or modest guest wear to a Bengali wedding (not a saree)?
A floor-length Anarkali is the easiest modest choice: it covers you from neck to ankle and looks festive without any draping. Pick a jewel tone such as royal blue or wine, and match your hijab to the embroidery – gold, ivory or a soft champagne looks elegant with Bengali-wedding colours. Use the dupatta as a second layer over one or both shoulders. For the morning gaye holud, a cotton kurta with straight pants and a dupatta is modest, comfortable and easy to wash.

Is a Bangladeshi wedding different from a Bengali wedding?
Yes, in some important ways. This guide focuses on Bengali Hindu weddings, with rituals like shubho drishti and sindoor daan. Bangladeshi weddings are mostly Muslim: the main events are the gaye holud, the nikah, the wedding reception and the walima, and modest outfits with covered arms are the norm. The colour rules are similar – avoid red and white. Read our full guide: what to wear to a Bangladeshi wedding as a guest.
How do you style an Anarkali for a Bengali wedding?
A few small touches make a kurta set or Anarkali feel right at a Bengali wedding:
- Gold-tone jewellery: Bengali weddings lean towards gold, so jhumkas or a choker look natural.
- A small bindi: red or maroon, if you usually wear one.
- A neat low bun with flowers, which keeps hair off your neck during the long evening ritual.
- Flat embroidered juttis or block heels, since you may be standing around the mandap for a while.
