For a jaggo, wear something bright, light and easy to dance in: a flared Anarkali or a kurta set in phulkari-style colours like hot pink, mustard, orange or green, with the dupatta pinned securely and flat juttis on your feet. This guide is for guests heading to a Punjabi pre-wedding night in the UK, Canada, the USA or Australia, often in a hall, a backyard or a family home.

What is a jaggo night and how dressy is it?

The jaggo is a lively Punjabi pre-wedding night, usually held a day or two before the wedding. Women of the family carry a decorated pot, the jaggo, lit with small diyas, and the group dances through the house or venue singing boliyan. Then the dhol takes over and the gidha goes on late.

It is festive but not formal. Think colour and comfort over heavy embellishment. You will be on your feet, clapping, dancing in a circle and possibly holding the jaggo yourself, so a heavy lehenga or a tight kurta works against you.

What colours should you wear to a jaggo?

Go bright. Jaggo photos look best with saturated colour: rani pink, parrot green, mustard, orange, turquoise and purple. Many families like a phulkari feel, so a print or embroidery with warm, cheerful colour fits right in.

Leave pale ivory and all-black for another night. They are not banned, but they can look flat next to the dhol, the lights and everyone else's colour. If the hosts have set a theme colour, follow it, and ask early so you have time to order.

| Outfit | Why it works at a jaggo | Fabric | Styling note | |---|---|---|---| | Bandhani Anarkali | Big flare for gidha, festive tie-dye colour | Chiffon | Pin dupatta at one shoulder | | Gota work Anarkali | Catches light from diyas and stage lights | Taffeta silk | Keep jewellery light | | Embroidered kurti with pants | Easy to move in, light to carry the jaggo | Cotton | Add a bright dupatta | | Kurta set with organza dupatta | Dressy but breathable for indoor halls | Embroidered cotton | Tuck dupatta for dancing |

Which outfits are best for dancing at a jaggo?

Option 1: A bandhani Anarkali

Bandhani is a classic choice for Punjabi and Rajasthani celebrations, and a chiffon Anarkali gives you a full twirl in the gidha circle. Our purple bandhani chiffon Anarkali with a hand-embroidered neckline is light enough to dance in for hours, and the purple sits beautifully next to pinks and oranges in group photos.

Option 2: A gota work Anarkali

If you want a little more shine, gota catches the glow of the diyas on the jaggo. The sage green taffeta silk Anarkali with gota work and a sequin organza dupatta holds its shape and looks dressy in evening photos. Both Anarkalis are $52 and come as a full set.

Option 3: An embroidered kurti with pants or salwar

For the most freedom, wear a short or mid-length kurti. The rani pink embroidered kurti with side tie-up at $25 is bright, simple and easy to pair with white or gold pants and a phulkari-style dupatta you may already own.

Option 4: An embroidered kurta set

If the jaggo is in a banquet hall with a sit-down dinner, a full kurta set looks a step more polished. The peach pink embroidered kurta set with cutwork organza dupatta is breathable cotton, which helps in a warm, crowded room.

How do you keep your dupatta secure while dancing?

A dupatta that slips off mid-gidha is the most common jaggo complaint. A few tricks help:

  • Pin it at the left shoulder with two safety pins, hidden under the fold
  • For energetic dancing, drape it across the body and tie the ends at the waist
  • Use a small brooch at the front if you want the pin to show
  • Skip long, heavy dupattas if you plan to carry the jaggo

If you are carrying the jaggo on your head, cover your hair with a light dupatta first and keep the rest of it pinned firmly, so nothing falls near the flames. Keep loose fabric away from the diyas at all times.

From our Jaipur studio: Bandhani is tied and dyed by hand, so tiny variations in the dots are part of the craft, not a flaw. Chiffon and georgette move with you during the gidha, while cotton breathes in a hot, packed room. When we test a flare, we check that it swings fully without riding up, which is exactly what you want on a jaggo dance floor.

What shoes, jewellery and hair work best for a jaggo?

Flat juttis or cushioned flats win every time. You will dance on wooden floors, carpet or a backyard lawn, and heels sink, slip and hurt by midnight. Pack a spare pair of socks or soft insoles for a long night.

Keep jewellery light: jhumkas, a few bangles and a maang tikka if you love one. Heavy necklaces swing and catch on dupattas when you dance. For hair, a long paranda braid is traditional and stays put, or try a low bun with flowers. Both survive hours of dancing better than open curls.

Plan your timing too. Made-to-measure pieces take 5–7 working days plus about 5–10 business days delivery, so order 3–4 weeks before the jaggo. For more ideas across every function, see our Indian wedding guest outfits guide.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear to a jaggo as a guest? A bright, flared Anarkali or a light kurta set with a pinned dupatta and flat juttis. Choose fabrics like chiffon, georgette or cotton that let you dance comfortably.

Can I wear black to a jaggo? Black is not forbidden, but most families prefer bright, happy colours for pre-wedding nights. If you love dark shades, add a bright dupatta in pink, green or mustard.

Do I need a phulkari dupatta for a jaggo? No. A phulkari-style dupatta is a lovely touch, but any bright dupatta works. Pin it well so it stays on through the gidha.

How early should I order a jaggo outfit from abroad? Order at least 3–4 weeks ahead. Made-to-measure takes 5–7 working days and delivery is about 5–10 business days, with free tracked shipping to the USA, UK, Canada, UAE and Australia.
