Quick answer

At a Bangladeshi wedding, female guests usually wear a saree, a salwar kameez, an Anarkali or a sharara in rich jewel tones, with shoulders and arms covered. Wear yellow, orange or green to the gaye holud, your dressiest outfit to the main wedding (biye), and something elegant but slightly softer to the walima. Avoid bridal red, plain white and, at the main ceremony, all black. A dupatta or scarf is useful if the nikah takes place in a mosque.

This guide is for guests at Bangladeshi weddings in London, Birmingham, Manchester, New York, Toronto or Sydney – whether you are part of the community or attending your first one.

What are the functions at a Bangladeshi wedding?

A Bangladeshi wedding is usually a series of events spread over several days. Families differ, but these are the most common:

| Function | Who hosts | Mood | What to wear | Colours | |---|---|---|---|---| | Paan-chini / engagement | Both families | Small, formal | Smart salwar kameez or kurta set | Pastels, soft jewel tones | | Gaye holud (holud / mehndi night) | Bride's and groom's sides, often separately | Fun, colourful, music | Cotton kurta set or saree you can get turmeric on | Yellow, orange, green, often a family theme | | Akht / aqd (nikah) | Bride's family | Religious, modest | Modest outfit, head covering if in a mosque | Soft or rich colours, not red | | Biye (wedding reception) | Bride's family | The grandest event | Your richest Anarkali, saree or sharara | Emerald, royal blue, wine, gold | | Walima / bou bhat | Groom's family | Elegant, relaxed | A dressy outfit, a notch softer than the biye | Pastels, champagne, jewel tones |

In the UK, the nikah and the main wedding are often held on the same day at a banqueting hall, and the holud may be a separate evening party. Ask which events you are invited to before you shop.

What should you wear to a gaye holud?

The gaye holud is the turmeric ceremony – the most colourful and playful event. Turmeric paste is applied to the bride or groom, and guests often get a little on them too.

  • Colours: yellow, orange, marigold and green. Many families choose a theme, such as yellow for the bride's side and orange or green for the groom's side. Ask before you buy.
  • Fabric: washable cotton or a light blend. Avoid delicate silk.
  • Style: a cotton kurta set, a printed saree or a palazzo set. Flowers in the hair are very common.

The yellow embroidered cotton tunic top ($27) with white pants is cheerful and easy to wash. For a fuller look, the mint green block print kurta set with hand-work yoke ($48) suits a green theme.

What should you wear to the main wedding (biye)?

This is the grandest event, usually held in the evening at a banqueting hall. Guests dress up: think rich colour, embroidery and shine.

  • Best choices: a heavy Anarkali, a silk or Banarasi saree, or a sharara or gharara set.
  • Colours: emerald, bottle green, royal blue, deep purple, wine, gold and champagne.
  • Avoid: bridal red (Bangladeshi brides very often wear red), plain white, and head-to-toe black.

The royal blue georgette Anarkali with gota lace dupatta ($52) stands out beautifully beside the bride's red. The sage green taffeta silk Anarkali with sequin organza dupatta ($52) has the sheen of silk without a heavy saree to manage. For a winter wedding, the wine velvet Anarkali ($52) is warm and festive.

What should you wear to the nikah?

The nikah (also called akht or aqd) is the religious marriage ceremony. If it is held in a mosque, cover your hair with a dupatta or scarf, keep your arms and legs covered, and expect to remove your shoes. If it is held at the venue on the same day as the wedding, your wedding outfit is fine – just keep a dupatta at hand.

What should you wear to the walima?

The walima (sometimes called bou bhat) is hosted by the groom's family after the wedding. It is elegant but usually a little softer than the main wedding. Pastels, champagne, lavender, powder blue and soft jewel tones all work. The lavender taffeta silk Anarkali ($52) is a lovely walima choice.

Modest and hijabi outfits for a Bangladeshi wedding

Many Bangladeshi weddings are Muslim, so modest outfits fit in perfectly.

  • Floor-length Anarkali: covers you from neck to ankle and looks festive without draping.
  • Long sleeves: full sleeves or three-quarter sleeves with a light inner.
  • Hijab: match it to the embroidery – gold, ivory or champagne looks elegant.
  • Dupatta: drape it over one or both shoulders as a second layer.

Because every Bahe Kurtiz outfit is stitched after you order, you can ask for longer sleeves or a higher neckline. More ideas: modest and hijabi Indian wedding guest outfits.

What should a non-Bangladeshi guest wear?

You do not need a saree. A floor-length Anarkali or an embroidered salwar kameez is easy to wear, respectful and widely loved at Bangladeshi weddings. Keep shoulders covered, avoid red and white, and you will look perfectly in place. Hosts usually appreciate guests who make the effort to wear South Asian clothes.

Bengali Hindu and Bangladeshi Muslim weddings: what is different?

Bengali culture is shared across West Bengal and Bangladesh, but weddings differ by religion. At a Bengali Hindu wedding you will see rituals like shubho drishti and sindoor daan. At a Bangladeshi Muslim wedding, the nikah, the holud and the walima are central. For a Hindu Bengali wedding, read our Bengali wedding guest outfit guide.

Practical tips for UK, US and Canadian weddings

  • Winter weddings: halls are warm inside, but bring a long coat or a shawl for arriving and leaving.
  • Long evenings: choose comfortable block heels or embellished flats.
  • Gifts: cash in an envelope is the most common wedding gift.
  • Timing: start times can run late, so eat something light before you go.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear to a Bangladeshi wedding as a guest? A saree, salwar kameez, Anarkali or sharara in a jewel tone, with shoulders and arms covered. Wear your dressiest outfit to the main wedding and yellow, orange or green to the gaye holud.

What colours should I avoid at a Bangladeshi wedding? Avoid bridal red, plain white (linked with mourning) and, at the main wedding, all black.

What do you wear to a gaye holud? Yellow, orange or green in washable cotton, because turmeric paste may get on your clothes. Ask the family if there is a colour theme.

Do I need to cover my head at a Bangladeshi wedding? Only if the nikah takes place in a mosque. At the venue it is not required, but keeping a dupatta at hand is a good idea.

Can a non-Bangladeshi guest wear a saree or Anarkali? Yes. Guests from any background are welcome to wear South Asian outfits, and hosts usually appreciate it. A floor-length Anarkali is the easiest choice.

What should I wear to a walima? An elegant outfit a little softer than the main wedding – pastels, champagne or soft jewel tones work well.
