Jaipur is famous for block printing, but not all block prints are the same. Here is a simple guide to the three prints you will see most often.
Sanganeri print
From Sanganer, near Jaipur. Fine floral buttis and creepers, usually on a white or light background with soft colours. Elegant and perfect for daily wear and office kurtis.
Bagru print
From the village of Bagru. Earthy colours like rust, black, mustard and indigo, often on an off-white or natural background. Bolder and more rustic than Sanganeri.
Dabu print
Dabu is a mud-resist technique. A paste of clay is printed on the fabric, then the fabric is dyed – often in indigo. The areas under the mud stay light, which creates a slightly cracked, handmade look.
How to spot real hand block printing
- Small variations in the print – no two repeats are exactly the same
- Slight overlap or gaps where blocks meet
- The print looks softer on the back of the fabric
- Natural, slightly uneven colour
These small imperfections are not defects. They are the signature of a handmade product.
Caring for block printed clothes
Wash separately in cold water the first few times, use mild detergent and dry in shade. This keeps colours bright for longer.
