By the Bahe Kurtiz styling team, Jaipur. Our kurta sets are hand embroidered and finished in our own Jaipur unit.

For a Hindu wedding ceremony, wear a comfortable, elegant kurta set or a light Anarkali that covers your shoulders, lets you sit cross-legged for a long time and comes with a dupatta you can drape over your head near the mandap. Choose breathable fabrics in warm, festive colours and avoid red, which is usually kept for the bride. This guide covers the pheras only, not the sangeet or reception.

What happens at the pheras, and why does your outfit matter?

The pheras are the heart of a Hindu wedding. The couple sits before a sacred fire, the priest chants, and they walk around the fire together to take their vows. Guests sit close by, often for one to three hours, and the ceremony may happen at the muhurat the family's priest has chosen, which can be early morning, midday or very late at night.

That means your outfit has three jobs. It should be comfortable to sit in, respectful near a religious fire, and fresh enough to look good in the family photos that follow straight after.

What should you avoid wearing to a Hindu wedding ceremony?

A few simple rules keep you comfortable and respectful:

  • Skip red and heavy bridal maroon unless the family says otherwise
  • Avoid all-black and all-white, which some families link with mourning
  • Leave strapless, short or very sheer styles for the after-party
  • Avoid long trailing hems and loose synthetic fabric near the havan fire
  • Choose shoes you can slip off quickly, as many mandaps are shoes-off

If you are unsure, ask the hosts. Every family and region has its own customs, and a quick message saves guesswork.

Which fabrics work best for sitting through the pheras?

Pick fabrics that breathe and do not crease into a mess after an hour on the floor. Chanderi, kota doria and soft embroidered cotton are all comfortable choices, and they are natural-feeling fabrics that sit better near a havan than shiny synthetics.

| Ceremony setting | Best fabric | Silhouette | Why it works | |---|---|---|---| | Indoor hall, cool AC | Chanderi with embroidery | Straight kurta with pants | Light but dressy, easy to layer a shawl | | Outdoor mandap, warm day | Kota doria | Straight or A-line kurta | Airy weave keeps you cool | | Late-night muhurat | Embroidered cotton | Kurta set with dupatta | Comfortable for hours, no stiffness | | Temple hall, floor seating | Cotton or chanderi | Full sleeves, long kurta | Modest and easy to sit in |

Which outfits are best for a Hindu wedding ceremony?

A chanderi kurta set for daytime pheras

Chanderi has a soft sheen that looks festive without trying too hard. Our coral pink chanderi kurta set with a hand-embroidered yoke comes with a cutwork dupatta that is light enough to drape over your head when the rituals begin. Coral is warm and auspicious without clashing with the bride's red.

A kota doria kurta set for warm or outdoor venues

Kota doria is a fine, open weave from Rajasthan that lets air through, which helps when you are sitting near a fire. The navy blue kota doria embroidered kurta set is rich enough for a wedding and still cool. Both sets are $52.

An embroidered cotton suit for very long or late ceremonies

When the muhurat lands at midnight, comfort matters most. The plum purple embroidered cotton suit set at $48 is soft, breathable and easy to sit in, and the deep plum looks lovely in candlelit and firelit photos.

A pastel set with an organza dupatta for morning ceremonies

Morning pheras suit softer shades. A peach or blush kurta set with a cutwork organza dupatta looks fresh in daylight. If you want this look, the peach pink embroidered kurta set pairs cotton comfort with a dressy dupatta.

How should you drape your dupatta near the mandap?

Many families invite guests to cover their heads during key rituals, and it is a kind gesture even when not asked. Drape the dupatta loosely over your hair and pin one end at the shoulder so both hands stay free for the akshat (rice) or flower shower.

When you move close to the fire, gather any loose ends and tuck them in. Keep hair tied back too. A low bun or braid stays neat and keeps strands away from smoke and sparks.

From our Jaipur studio: We often suggest cotton, chanderi and kota doria for ceremonies because they stay comfortable over long hours and do not cling when the room gets warm. Fine hand embroidery on a yoke catches soft light without glare, so it photographs well next to the havan flames and marigold decor.

Shoes, jewellery and a small carry kit

Wear juttis or flats that slip off and on easily. Choose jewellery that will not snag: studs or small jhumkas, a few bangles and a simple chain. A heavy choker gets uncomfortable over three hours.

Bring a small potli with tissues, a hair tie, safety pins and a light shawl for chilly halls. If the venue is in a cold city in December, a pashmina over your kurta set is perfectly appropriate.

Timing matters when you order from abroad. Made-to-measure takes 5–7 working days plus about 5–10 business days delivery, so order 3–4 weeks before the wedding. Our free custom fit means the kurta sits right when you are sitting, not only when you are standing.

Frequently asked questions

What should a female guest wear to a Hindu wedding ceremony? A kurta set, light Anarkali or saree with covered shoulders, in festive colours other than red. Bring a dupatta in case you are asked to cover your head.

Can I wear black or white to a Hindu wedding? It is best to avoid all-black and all-white at the ceremony, as some families link them with mourning. Add colour through the dupatta if you love neutral shades.

Do I need to cover my head at the pheras? It depends on the family and region. Carrying a dupatta lets you cover your head when others do, which is always respectful.

How do I care for a chanderi or kota doria kurta after the wedding? Hand wash in cold water with mild detergent or dry clean, dry in shade and press on low heat from the inside. Avoid wringing the fabric.
