Quick answer

For a Sikh wedding, guests usually wear a modest kurta set or salwar suit with a dupatta that can cover the head inside the gurdwara. Pick sleeves, a higher neckline and comfortable pants you can sit cross-legged in, and keep the colours soft or cheerful, because the Anand Karaj is a morning ceremony. Save the shine for the evening reception.

This guide is for you if you are flying in from the UK, US or Canada for a gurdwara wedding, or attending your first Anand Karaj close to home.

By the Bahe Kurtiz styling team, Jaipur. Every piece is stitched in our own Jaipur unit, and our block prints are printed by hand by our karigars.

What should you wear to an Anand Karaj as a guest?

The Anand Karaj takes place in the gurdwara, in front of the Guru Granth Sahib. The couple walks around the holy book four times during the laavan, and guests sit on the floor for most of the ceremony. Your outfit has three jobs: cover your head, let you sit comfortably for an hour or more, and look respectful.

A straight or A-line kurta with pants and a matching dupatta does all three. Our grey hand block print cotton kurta set with a Kota Doria dupatta ($52) is a good example: soft cotton for sitting, and a light dupatta that stays put on the head. Knee-length or longer kurtas work best, because shorter tops ride up when you sit on the floor.

If you want something a little dressier for the morning, a chanderi set adds a gentle sheen without looking like evening wear. The coral pink chanderi kurta set with a hand-embroidered yoke ($52) photographs beautifully in daylight and suits close friends of the family.

If the wedding is in a UK or Canadian winter

Wear a long coat or a fitted cardigan over your kurta on the way in, and take it off inside. Shoes come off at the entrance, so choose shoes that slip on and off easily. Thin warm leggings under straight pants are a smart trick for a cold hall.

How do you cover your head at a gurdwara?

Everyone covers their head inside the gurdwara, men and women. Fold your dupatta lengthwise into a strip about a hand wide, place the middle on your head, and let one end fall over each shoulder. One small bobby pin at the crown keeps it in place when you bow or stand for the ardaas.

Many gurdwaras keep spare scarves at the door, but your own dupatta looks far better in photos and matches your outfit. Keep it on in the langar hall as well, where the community meal is served after the ceremony.

From our Jaipur studio: Kota Doria has a fine checked weave that grips the hair, so it slips far less than chiffon or satin. Organza dupattas look lovely in photos but are crisp and smooth, so pin them twice if you choose one for the ceremony. A cotton or chanderi dupatta is the easiest to manage while sitting on the floor.

Gurdwara dress code checklist for guests

Before you walk in, run through this list:

  1. Head covered: a dupatta or scarf for women, a scarf or bandana for men. Keep it on the whole time inside, including the langar hall.
  2. Shoes off: leave them in the shoe area at the entrance. Clean socks or bare feet are fine.
  3. Shoulders and legs covered: sleeves, a modest neckline and pants or a long skirt.
  4. No tobacco or alcohol: do not bring cigarettes or alcohol onto gurdwara premises.
  5. Sit on the floor: sit cross-legged or with legs folded to the side, and avoid pointing your feet towards the Guru Granth Sahib.
  6. Phone on silent: photos are usually taken by the family's photographer; follow their lead.
  7. Langar: accept the meal with both hands cupped if offered karah prashad, and sit with everyone on the floor or at the tables provided.

What should a non-Sikh guest wear to a Sikh wedding?

The same as everyone else: a modest outfit and a head covering. A kurta set with a dupatta is the easiest choice, and hosts appreciate guests who wear Indian clothes. If you prefer Western clothes, choose a long-sleeved dress or a top with trousers, avoid short skirts (you will sit on the floor), and bring a scarf large enough to cover your hair.

What should you avoid wearing to a Sikh wedding?

Most rules come down to modesty and practicality. A quick list to check before you pack:

  • Sleeveless tops, deep necklines and short hemlines inside the gurdwara (carry a shrug or wrap if your reception outfit is more revealing)
  • Very tight skirts, fishtail cuts or heavy lehengas that make floor seating hard
  • Bridal red that could look like the bride's outfit
  • Black or all-dark outfits at the ceremony, which some families feel are unlucky at a wedding
  • Very long trains or trailing dupattas that get in the way on a crowded floor

If you are unsure, ask the host. Families differ, and a quick message is always better than guessing.

What changes between the ceremony and the reception?

The Anand Karaj is calm and modest. The reception, often the same evening, is where Punjabi weddings turn into a party, so you can switch to something with more sparkle.

| Event | Time | Outfit | Fabric | Colour | |---|---|---|---|---| | Anand Karaj | Morning | Kurta pant set with dupatta | Cotton, chanderi, Kota Doria | Peach, mint, pale pink, yellow, sky blue | | Langar | Midday | Same outfit, head still covered | Breathable cotton | Same as above | | Reception | Evening | Anarkali or embellished kurta set | Georgette, taffeta silk, organza | Royal blue, emerald, wine, gold |

For the reception, an Anarkali gives you swing on the dance floor. The royal blue georgette Anarkali suit with gota lace dupatta ($52) moves well when the dhol starts and still looks polished at a hotel venue.

If you only want to pack one outfit, choose an embroidered kurta set and change the jewellery. The off-white embroidered cotton kurta set with cutwork organza dupatta ($52) works in the morning with small studs, then dresses up at night with statement earrings and a bold lip. This season, soft pastels with tonal embroidery are a popular choice for daytime gurdwara weddings.

Our pick for you

For the ceremony, the grey block print set or the coral chanderi set. For the reception, the royal blue georgette Anarkali. And if you want more ideas for the other functions, browse our Indian wedding guest outfits.

Our made-to-measure pieces take 5 to 7 working days to stitch, then about 5 to 10 business days to arrive. Order at least 3 to 4 weeks before the wedding so you have time for a trial at home. Shipping is free to the USA, UK, Canada, UAE and Australia, with tracking, and import duties and taxes are included, so there is nothing to pay on delivery.

With our free custom fit, you share your bust, waist, hip and height, and we stitch to your measurements at no extra cost. We also send you photos of your piece being made before it ships.

One last etiquette note: the day belongs to the couple and the Guru Granth Sahib. Dress so you can sit, bow and celebrate without fuss, and leave the brightest red to the bride.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear to a Sikh wedding as a guest? A modest kurta set or salwar suit with a dupatta to cover your head, sleeves, a higher neckline and comfortable pants for sitting on the floor. Save sparkle for the evening reception.

What should a non-Sikh guest wear to a Sikh wedding? A modest outfit with covered shoulders and legs, plus a scarf or dupatta to cover your head inside the gurdwara. A kurta set is the easiest choice.

Can I wear a saree to a Sikh wedding? Yes, but a kurta set is more practical for sitting on the gurdwara floor. If you wear a saree, cover your midriff and shoulders and bring a scarf for your head.

What do I wear to a Sikh wedding in the UK in winter? A long coat over your kurta set on the way in, warm leggings under straight pants and slip-on shoes. Gurdwaras are usually heated inside.

Do I need to cover my head at a Sikh wedding? Yes. Everyone covers their head inside the gurdwara, including the langar hall. A dupatta or scarf is perfect for women.

Can I wear black to a Sikh wedding? It is best to avoid black at the Anand Karaj, as some families see it as unlucky at a wedding. Many guests do wear darker colours at the evening reception, but check with the host if you are unsure.

Can I wear a lehenga to an Anand Karaj? You can, but it is not practical for sitting on the floor. Most guests save lehengas and heavy Anarkalis for the reception and wear a kurta set to the gurdwara.

How far in advance should I order a custom kurta set for a Sikh wedding? Order at least 3 to 4 weeks ahead. Stitching takes 5 to 7 working days and delivery about 5 to 10 business days.
