If you want a festive outfit that feels light on the skin but still has a soft glow, chanderi is the fabric to know. It sits between everyday cotton and heavy silk – elegant enough for Diwali and day weddings, comfortable enough to wear for hours.

What is chanderi?

Chanderi is a traditional handloom fabric named after Chanderi, a small town in Madhya Pradesh with a weaving history that goes back centuries. It was once woven for royal families, and it is still prized for its sheer texture and quiet sheen.

Today you will mostly find three types:

| Type | How it feels | Best for | |---|---|---| | Chanderi cotton | Light, crisp, breathable | Day events, office, summer festivals | | Chanderi silk | Soft sheen, slightly fluid | Pujas, festive lunches, day weddings | | Silk-cotton blend | Balanced – a little glow, easy to wear | All-round festive wear |

The signature of chanderi is its slight transparency and the way it catches light without looking shiny. That is why good chanderi kurtas are usually lined – you get the glow without the see-through.

Why chanderi works so well for festive wear

  • It is light. Even with embroidery, a chanderi kurta does not feel heavy – ideal for long Diwali evenings or a full day of wedding functions.
  • It drapes softly. A straight chanderi kurta falls cleanly and looks polished in photos.
  • It loves embroidery. The smooth surface shows off thread work, mirror detailing and gota beautifully.
  • It travels well. Folded with tissue, a chanderi set packs flat in a suitcase – handy if you are flying to a wedding.

Meet our coral chanderi set

Our coral pink chanderi kurta set has a hand-embroidered yoke with thread work, mirror detailing and beadwork, framed by a gota border. The kurta is lined in soft cotton, the pants are cotton for all-day ease, and the chanderi dupatta has a scalloped cutwork edge.

It is the kind of outfit you can wear to a Diwali puja, a festive lunch, a day wedding or an office celebration – and then again next season.

How to style a chanderi kurta set

For Diwali puja: pearl studs, a small satin clutch and embellished flats. Keep make-up fresh – a rosy lip and a little kajal.

For a day wedding: silver or gold jhumkas, a sleek low bun and block heels. Drape the dupatta on one shoulder so the embroidered yoke stays visible.

For office Diwali: drop the dupatta or wear it as a scarf, add a watch and a structured tote.

For winter abroad: a camel or ivory long coat over coral looks beautiful, with ankle boots in a neutral shade.

| Occasion | Jewellery | Shoes | Dupatta drape | |---|---|---|---| | Puja | Pearl studs | Embellished flats | Both shoulders | | Day wedding | Jhumkas | Block heels | One shoulder | | Office | Small studs, watch | Loafers or flats | Scarf or skip | | Dinner | Statement earrings | Heels | Elbow drape |

Prefer a softer, everyday look? Our off-white embroidered kurta set and plum embroidered cotton suit work for similar occasions in breathable cotton.

How to care for chanderi

  • Dry clean is safest, especially for embroidered chanderi.
  • Never wring or twist – the weave is delicate.
  • Store folded with tissue paper between layers to protect mirror work and gota.
  • Steam or iron on low heat from the reverse side; avoid ironing directly on the embroidery.
  • Keep away from perfume sprays directly on the fabric.

Getting the right fit

Chanderi has very little stretch, so fit matters. Use your bust, waist and hip measurements – our guide on how to measure yourself takes two minutes. Between sizes? We can stitch your set to your exact measurements with our free custom fit.

Frequently asked questions

Is chanderi see-through? Unlined chanderi can be slightly sheer. That is why our chanderi kurta comes with a soft cotton lining.

Is chanderi good for summer? Yes. Chanderi is light and airy, which is why it is popular for summer weddings and daytime festivals.

Can I wash chanderi at home? Dry clean is recommended for embroidered chanderi. If you hand wash, use cold water, mild detergent and never wring it.

Is chanderi silk or cotton? It can be either, or a blend. Each has a slightly different feel – cotton is crisper, silk is softer with more sheen.
