For hot days, a linen dress is usually the better choice: linen breathes more, dries faster and feels cooler than cotton, while cotton is softer and creases less. The best pick depends on where you are wearing it and how much ironing you want to do.

Quick answer
- Hottest, most humid days: pure linen
- Everyday wear with less ironing: cotton
- Holidays and brunch: a lined linen midi dress
- Office: either – linen with a blazer looks especially polished
Is linen or cotton cooler in summer?
Linen is woven from flax fibres that are thicker and hollower than cotton. The weave is looser, so air passes through easily and moisture leaves the fabric quickly. Cotton also breathes well, but it holds on to moisture longer, which can feel heavy on very humid days.
| | Linen | Cotton | |---|---|---| | Breathability | Excellent | Very good | | Dries | Fast | Slower | | Feel | Crisp, textured, softens with washing | Soft and smooth from day one | | Creasing | Natural, relaxed creases | Light | | Look | Effortless, elegant | Clean, casual | | Best for | Heat, holidays, brunch | Everyday, travel, easy care |
Does linen look too wrinkled?
Linen creases – that is part of its character. A lined linen dress creases less than an unlined one and holds its shape better. If you prefer a sharp look, iron it while slightly damp on medium heat. If you love an easy, relaxed look, simply shake it out and wear it.
Which linen dress should you choose?
Two silhouettes cover most occasions:
- Flutter sleeves and a notch neck feel soft and romantic – perfect for garden parties, brunch and holidays. Our white linen flutter sleeve midi dress has pearl-finish buttons from neck to hem, a fitted bodice and a swingy A-line skirt with a front slit.
- A shirt collar and sleeveless cut feel sharper and more polished – great for city days and the office with a blazer. See our white linen collar button-down midi dress.
Both are made from pure linen with a soft cotton lining, so they are breathable and not see-through.
How do you style a white linen dress?
Holiday: sunglasses, a rattan bag and clear wedges or flat sandals.
Brunch: pearl drop earrings, a woven clutch and block heels.
Office: a beige blazer, a watch and loafers.
Evening: a denim jacket or camel trench over the dress, with strappy sandals.
From our Jaipur studio: for white linen, we always add a cotton lining. It keeps the dress opaque in bright sunlight and makes it softer against the skin.
Prefer cotton for everyday? Our navy floral block print cotton maxi dress is an easy, breezy alternative.
How do you care for linen?
- Wash cold on a gentle cycle or by hand; wash whites separately.
- Avoid harsh bleach and dry in shade to keep white bright.
- Iron slightly damp, or embrace the natural creases.
- Store on a hanger.
How do you get the right fit?
Linen has no stretch, so the right size matters. Use your bust, waist and hip measurements – our guide on how to measure yourself takes two minutes. Between sizes? Choose our free custom fit and we stitch it to your measurements.
