For an Indian wedding in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, guests usually wear a glamorous Anarkali or embroidered kurta set for hotel ballroom events, and lighter chanderi or Kota Doria for outdoor daytime functions. Keep a dupatta or wrap handy for chilly air conditioning indoors and for modest coverage in public spaces.

This guide is for guests living in the UAE and those flying in from the UK, US, Canada or Australia for a destination wedding at a hotel, beach resort or desert venue.

What should you wear to an Indian wedding in Dubai?

Indian weddings in the UAE are often held in five-star hotel ballrooms, beach resorts or desert camps, and many are large, polished and photo-heavy. Guests tend to dress up: jewel tones, taffeta silk, gota and embroidery under chandelier lighting.

At the same time, the climate swings sharply between outside and inside. You may spend the afternoon in warm sun at an outdoor mehndi, then walk into a ballroom where the air conditioning is set very cool. Plan every outfit for both.

For evening functions, a taffeta silk Anarkali catches ballroom light beautifully. The lavender taffeta silk Anarkali with gota work and organza dupatta ($52) has the sheen and structure that hotel venues call for, and it is fully covering in length.

How do you dress for hot outdoors and cold AC indoors?

The trick is breathable fabric with a layer you can add or remove.

| Venue | What to expect | Fabric | Layer | |---|---|---|---| | Outdoor garden or beach (day) | Warm sun, bright light | Chanderi, Kota Doria, cotton | Light dupatta for sun cover | | Desert camp (evening) | Pleasant to cool after sunset | Georgette, taffeta silk | Shawl or long-sleeve layer | | Hotel ballroom | Strong AC, cool air | Taffeta silk, georgette | Dupatta over both shoulders | | Home or villa function | Mixed indoor and outdoor | Cotton, chanderi | Light wrap |

For daytime events outside, the coral pink chanderi kurta set with a hand-embroidered yoke ($52) feels light and still looks festive. Chanderi breathes in the heat and has enough sheen for daytime photos.

From our Jaipur studio: Rajasthan's heat taught our karigars how fabric behaves in dry, bright sun. Kota Doria, with its fine open weave, lets air through better than almost anything, while taffeta silk traps a little warmth, which is exactly what you want in a cold ballroom. Pick the fabric for where you will spend most of the evening.

How modest should you dress in the UAE?

Wedding venues in Dubai and Abu Dhabi are private, and inside them guests dress the way they would at any Indian wedding. But you may pass through hotel lobbies, malls or public areas on the way, where covering shoulders and knees is the respectful norm.

Indian outfits handle this naturally. Practical points:

  • Anarkalis and long kurta sets cover the legs fully
  • Carry your dupatta draped over both shoulders in public areas
  • If your blouse or top is sleeveless, add a wrap or shrug when you leave the venue
  • Choose opaque fabrics or ones with a full lining

The navy blue Kota Doria embroidered kurta set ($52) is a smart choice for a daytime puja or family lunch. It is airy, covered and comes with a matching dupatta.

What should you wear to each function at a UAE wedding?

Mehndi

Often outdoors or poolside in the afternoon. Wear chanderi or cotton in green, yellow or coral, and avoid heavy fabrics in the sun.

Sangeet

Usually in a ballroom or tent with a big dance floor. Choose a flowing Anarkali that twirls. The royal blue georgette Anarkali with handwork and gota lace dupatta ($52) moves well and looks rich under stage lights.

Wedding and reception

The most formal events. Wear your richest taffeta or embroidered piece with statement jewellery. Dubai receptions often go glamorous, so this is the moment for gold and sparkle.

This season, soft pastels with gold thread are a popular choice for UAE ballroom events, alongside classic jewel tones.

Our pick for you

The lavender taffeta Anarkali for the reception, the royal blue georgette Anarkali for the sangeet, and the coral chanderi set for daytime outdoor events.

A final etiquette note: UAE weddings can be very grand, but the bride still comes first. Keep your sparkle a notch below hers.
