Celebrating Diwali away from home is special. Whether it is a family puja, a community event or a Diwali party at the office, the right outfit makes it feel like home.
For the family puja
Choose something traditional and comfortable for sitting on the floor and lighting diyas. A cotton kurta pant dupatta set in a festive colour – mint, mustard, rose or deep blue – is perfect. Hand block prints add a homely, Jaipur feel.
For the office Diwali party
Many workplaces in the UK, USA and Canada now celebrate Diwali. A straight kurta set in a soft colour, worn with simple earrings, looks festive but still office-friendly. Skip the heavy dupatta if you are commuting – drape it only for photos.
For the community Diwali night
This is the time to dress up. A flared Anarkali in taffeta silk with gota detailing feels celebratory and photographs well under lights and diyas.
Colours that feel like Diwali
Gold, mustard, marigold orange, emerald, deep pink and royal blue are classic. Pastels like mint and lavender are a fresh, modern option.
Staying warm without hiding your outfit
Diwali falls in autumn, so evenings can be cold abroad. Layer a fitted thermal underneath, carry a pashmina-style shawl, or wear a long coat over your outfit and take it off indoors.
Plan ahead
Shipping from India takes time, so order your Diwali outfit early. For next year, aim to order by the end of September.
