Indian weddings abroad usually run over two or three days, and each function has its own mood. If you have been invited to one in the USA, UK or Canada, here is an easy way to plan your outfits.

Mehendi: bright, light and comfortable

The mehendi is relaxed and colourful. Guests sit for hours while henna is applied, so choose something you can move and sit in. A cotton kurta set or a flowy Anarkali in yellow, green, pink or orange works well. Hand block printed cotton is ideal because it is breathable and looks festive without being heavy.

Sangeet: a little more glamour

The sangeet is the music and dance night. This is the time for a twirl-friendly Anarkali or a dressier kurta set with a sheer dupatta. Taffeta silk with gota work catches the light beautifully on the dance floor.

Wedding ceremony: elegant and traditional

For the ceremony itself, guests usually dress in rich, traditional outfits. Jewel tones such as emerald, wine, royal blue and deep pink are safe choices. An Anarkali with a matching dupatta is classic and easy to wear for a long day.

Reception: polished evening look

Receptions are often held in a hotel ballroom. A fitted kurta set in a muted shade like sage, lavender or ivory, styled with statement earrings, looks graceful and modern.

Colours to avoid

Avoid wearing all red, which is traditionally the bride's colour, and plain white or black unless the couple has asked for it. When in doubt, ask the family – most are happy to guide you.

Practical tips for guests abroad

  • Order early. Outfits shipped from India need time, so order 3–4 weeks before the wedding.
  • Get the fit right. Off-the-rack Indian sizes often run small. A made-to-measure outfit saves you alteration costs.
  • Think about the weather. For autumn and winter weddings, carry a shawl or a light jacket over your outfit for photos outside.
